RizzitGo SpreadsheetActual vs volumetric weight

Understand chargeable parcel weight with a worked example and the measurements to request before accepting a shipping quote.

QUICK ANSWER

A light parcel can occupy enough space to be billed above its scale weight. Ask for the packed dimensions, scale weight and the exact route’s charging rule before comparing quotes.

The arithmetic below is a DHL Express illustration, not a RizzitGO rate, route guarantee or live freight quote.

RizzitGo SpreadsheetRecord two measurements

DHL Express UK explains that it compares actual and volumetric weight and uses the greater figure for chargeable weight. Its published centimetre-and-kilogram illustration uses a divisor of 5,000. A route sold through a shopping agent may have another divisor, rounding step, minimum or restriction: obtain its own rule rather than transferring a DHL example to every line.

Actual weight should describe the finished parcel, including its outer packaging. A sum of item weights recorded before packing is useful preparation, but it is not the final carton measurement.

RizzitGo SpreadsheetWork through one hypothetical carton

Suppose a packed carton measures 40 × 30 × 30 cm and weighs 3.1 kg. Using the illustrative 5,000 divisor, its dimensional weight is 7.2 kg. That comparison explains a higher billing weight without establishing any shipping price.

Input or resultIllustrative value
Packed dimensions40 × 30 × 30 cm
Actual weight3.1 kg
Volumetric calculation40 × 30 × 30 ÷ 5,000 = 7.2 kg
Greater weight, before any route-specific rounding7.2 kg

RizzitGo SpreadsheetRequest the quote inputs

Keep the quote date and destination beside the measurements so you can reproduce the comparison. If a revised estimate arrives after packing, compare those inputs first; an unexplained difference is a question to resolve before payment.

  • Ask whether the figures describe a final packed carton or an estimate.
  • Request length, width and height with units, plus the actual scale weight.
  • Confirm the divisor, billing increments and minimum billable weight for that line.
  • Separate the freight calculation from optional packing, cover and destination charges.
  • Keep the carrier or agent’s written answer with the quote.

RizzitGo SpreadsheetChange packing only for a reason

A smaller carton can reduce dimensional weight if it safely fits the same contents. Reducing protection can also create a damage risk. Ask for a revised packing plan and measurements rather than requesting the smallest possible parcel without considering what is inside.

For example, 35 × 25 × 20 cm gives 3.5 kg under the same illustrative divisor. That is a different carton proposal, not proof the contents will fit or that a real route will charge less.
